Forbes Tabs Olympia #8
Best Place to Do Business

Several factors helped the Olympia area reach its No. 8 ranking nationally on Forbes magazine's new list of the best places to do business or have a job, experts said Wednesday.

South Sound moved up from 10th nationally last year.

"We have a very stable economy," said Pete Swensson, senior planner for Thurston Regional Planning Council.

While other parts of the country have experienced economic downturns in the interim, the Olympia area has avoided a recession since 1982, Swensson said.

"It's a good place to have a career and a good place to build a business," he said.

All the talk about national economic downturns and recession makes people nervous. But the fact is, Thurston County is ahead of the game when it comes to our economy and the performance of our local businesses.

Homes may be selling more slowly, but sales prices are holding up well especially when you consider our five-year history. And, other indicators like unemployment rates and general sales trends continue to outperform other areas of the country.

Next time you hear the doom and gloom in the media, I encourage both local businesses and shoppers to look at the facts. Living is better in Thurston County.
