Thurston County, Washington, like many communities is experiencing
significant growth in our elderly population. Some 29% of our
population is over 55 and the community has grown with our aging to
offer a wide range of recreational, leisure, educational and service
options tailored to senior needs and interest. The excellent local
amenities make relocating to Thurston County an attractive option
for seniors and baby boomers alike.
The
State capital is located in Olympia and provides senior citizens the

new skills, and to use their life experiences to better the community for
generations to come. Three major colleges help keep our county richly
diverse, constantly thinking and always engaged.
Volunteer
opportunities abound; our many Senior Centers, the Retired and Senior
Volunteer Program, Senior Companions, and the legislatively active Senior
Lobby are but a few of many opportunities to volunteer. Local schools,
hospitals and civic organizations add to the options for those wanting to
share their time and talent.
Olympia is fortunate to be home to the very busy
Senior Services for South Sound, a non-profit agency dedicated to serving
the elders of Thurston County. Their mission: “To celebrate life in
partnership with seniors and their families to support their ability to
remain independent in the community” is more a way of life than a goal.
Their wide variety of programs including Adult Day Centers, Senior
Nutrition, the Care Connection, along with a terrific activities roster
including educational classes, recreation and fitness programs,
entertainment and trips offers something for everyone. You’ll find equally
impressive senior groups in Rochester, Tenino, Rainier and Yelm.
